July 23, 2012

  • The day started out with miracles after miracles. (we call them that because they can only be that in his condition)
  • We got here at 7am, with Claire (our favorite British/S.Africa PT). Seth was able to move his arms so much better today as well as getting up out of bed with only the aid of the bed moving up and down at angles. No help from us. Additionally he stood up on his own and sat in a chair for the first time where Claire worked him over for awhile and even engaged him in a small arm wrestle. Seth had his eyes closed, sweating in concentration and insisted that he was winning, but Claire said she didn't know they had started. :)
  • Breakfast came in and he was able, when it was in the right place to feed himself mostly by himself including drinking with a straw.
  • She worked him for awhile and then he got back into bed.
  • Both doctors came by for assessments and Seth proudly told them of his amazing progress.
  • They will give him an MRI in the next couple days to assess the swelling and bruising on his spinal cord. They don't want him pushing his PT too fast and so he won't go to the gym for 1-2 more weeks.  Happy with his progress. He should be wearing the Miami brace for 5-6 months and in hospital for 2-3 more weeks.
  • Seth would love personal letters to him. He really enjoys them. Please send leave comments and we will make sure Seth gets to read them.
  • Talked more of the accident and what happened. Realized what a miracle it was that the bones that allow him to work on the PT to help his neck improve were not broken.
  • Went up to the surgeon's office to help hold Tommy while his stitches were taken out.
  • Helped Seth eat lunch
  • Seth had help taking a shower with our new favorite nurse. A sweet and caring lady named Lorraine. She cares for everyone of Seth's needed details.
  • Ran up the street to a small grocery store to find a kids toothbrush to allow him to brush his teeth. A regular toothbrush is too big to fit into his mouth. It was nice to be outside for a few minutes with beautiful weather and I was able to look out and see where downtown Johannesburg.
  • Seth was absolutely exhausted this afternoon from his physical exercises.
  • Katie went into surgery again to repair her ankle. There is neurcosis and the stitches needed to be re-done. Was able to give her a blessing beforehand.
  • Caroline took Cali to the clinic today and found out that her crankiness has a reason. Soar throat, double ear infection and runny nose. Awesome.
  • Seth had dinner around 5pm. Sat up in the chair to eat. I cut food and he was able to eat by himself, although this completely wipes him out of both strength and energy.
  • Katie got out of surgery and despite being told that only her right ankle would be worked on, both were. She is hopeful to be discharged and return to the states in the next 24-48 hours.
  • Jet lag has caught up to me so I came home at 9, Wiggins till 11pm, then I'll go in early tomorrow and Wiggins later.
  • Removed Seth Wiggins stitches from his head. For tomorrow's big feat, I will be shaving his head.
  • Good night from Jo'Berg South Africa....
"Everybody in this life has their challenges and difficulties. That is part of our mortal test. The reason for some of these trials cannot be readily understood except on the basis of faith and hope because there is often a larger purpose which we do not always understand. Peace comes through hope."

  1. Oh my gosh. Seth and Caroline, this is Lindsay Campbell from the Ghana trip, all of over 3 years ago. Just wanted to let you guys know that I and a lot of the other Ghana crew are thinking about you! It is such a shock to the system to hear about this, and though I know we haven't spoken in years, you are very much a part of my heart. I am SO HAPPY that all of you are relatively okay. You are such great people, and I'm glad to hear that you are getting lots of support, emotionally and otherwise. I believe in you two, and your beautiful family - please stay strong! Lots of love, Lindsay
